SWEDES’ SWEET SIXTH INNING SECURES GAME 1 VS SPIRES

Leavenworth, Kan. – The Bethany College Swedes took the road to Leavenworth, Kan. to take on the University of Saint Mary Spires in the first mid-week conference matchup of the season.

Josue Figuera kicked off the scoring in the first inning with batting in Jonathan Crist to put the Swedes on the board. William Sanchez would follow that with a single up the middle to score Fernando Bones to put Bethany up 2-0. In the second, the Swedes would score four more runs to go up 6-1. The Spires would own the next three innings scoring six straight to take a 7-6 lead, but that would be short-lived as Bethany would pour in eight runs in the top of the sixth in almost every way possible outside of a homerun. Both teams would score two more runs each as the Swedes would walk away winners 17-9.

Diego Rivera and Jonathan Crist would each tally three hits on the evening. Crist totaled five RBI and three runs scored along with a stolen base. Fernando Bones went 2-3 at the plate and drew three walks. Mann Leos stole three bases. Every starter recorded at least one hit in the contest.

Juan Melo drew his second start of his career going 4.2 innings while striking out three. Domingo Azevedo, Preston Senter, and Austin Arrocha would combine for 4.1 innings striking out three while only allowing two runs.
