SWEDES FALL TO SPIRES

Leavenworth, Kan. – The Bethany College Swedes Football Team took the road to Leavenworth, Kansas to face off against the University of Saint Mary Spires with a chance to spoil the Spires homecoming.

There were some bright spots throughout the game for the Swedes. In the 2nd quarter, Bethany was able to force Saint Mary to turn the ball over via a fourth down stop. In the third period, Anthony Harris was able to hop on a loose football to force another turnover for the defense. Also, in the third quarter, the Swedes would make another fourth down stop for their third forced turnover. In the final period of play, Keanu Ebesu would pick-off a Spires pass leading to the fourth turnover for the Saint Mary offense.

Peyton Mainolfi would go 21 for 42 with 192 yards through the air. Darnell Thompson and Roodley Toussant would both tally 7 carries on the afternoon, but Thompson would record 43 yards to lead the way for the Swedes. On the receiving end, Brock Burnette would lead the team in both catches (6 catches) and yards (63 yards).

Khyree Marshall would lead the Swedes in solo tackles with eight as well as total tackles with 10. Shane Harris would record two pass break-ups on the afternoon.

Zeke Mumford, an honorable mention punter last year, would punt for 266 yards averaging 38 yard per punt and had two punts downed inside the 20-yard line.

As a team, Bethany put up 207 yards of total offense. When it came down to penalties, the Swedes played a mostly clean game with two penalties for 8 yards compared to the Spires seven penalties for 177 yards.

The Bethany College Swedes have a two-game homestand over the next two weeks. Up first is a matchup with the McPherson College Bulldogs for Bethany's homecoming. Kickoff is set for 1PM CT on October 22, 2022.
