McPherson, Kan. – The Bethany College Swedes men's soccer team fell 4–3 to McPherson College on Wednesday night in a dramatic and hard-fought road match at Paul Family Field.
The match started with high intensity from both sides. The Swedes demonstrated good defensive organization early on, creating a few promising chances in the attacking third. Despite their efforts, the Bulldogs broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, capitalizing on a rebound from a long-range effort to make it 1–0. Just before halftime, McPherson doubled their lead in the 43rd minute with a quick counterattack, sending the Swedes into the break trailing 2–0.
Bethany came out with renewed energy and determination in the second half, and it paid off immediately. Just one minute after the restart, a brilliant combination between Steven McQueen and Richard Livingston ended with Livingston firing home a powerful strike to cut the deficit to 2–1. The Swedes kept pushing forward and continued to create several dangerous chances, but were unable to find the equalizer.
In the 71st minute, a long ball over the top caught the Swedes' backline off guard, allowing McPherson to score their third goal and restore a two-goal advantage. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 4–1 in the 81st minute from the penalty spot, seemingly putting the game out of reach.
However, Bethany refused to give up. With just under four minutes remaining, Mordecai Masakwa took advantage of a defensive miscommunication inside the box to score and make it 4–2. Less than a minute later, Richard Livingston produced a brilliant solo run and set up Baptista Amofa, who calmly slotted the ball home to bring the Swedes within one goal at 4–3. Despite the late surge and momentum shift, time ran out before Bethany could complete the comeback.
