SWEDES SWEEP BRONCOS IN HOME OPENER
Lindsborg, Kan. - The Bethany College Swedes hosted the Hastings College Broncos for the first home games of the 2023 season. Bethany managed to end the day with two wins against Hastings.
Game 1
The Broncos got on the scoreboard first, scoring a run in the first inning. Hastings added to their lead with a three run rally in the third inning, making the score 4-0. The Swedes responded and got on the board in the bottom of the third with an error and a ground out to the right side, making the score 4-2.
The Swedes continued to chip away and tied up the game at 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th. Lilliana Martinez hit a 2 RBI triple to center field, scoring Marissa Riley and Melinda Cratty.
The Broncos put a run up in the top of the 6th that was answered by a Swede run in the bottom half of the inning, making the score 5-5.
Hastings then put two runs up in the top of the 7th, putting pressure on the Swedes. The women stepped up to the challenge and pushed three runs across to win the game. Shantell Evans singled to left field to score Marissa Riley and walk off the first home game of the season.
Cambree Aguirre led things off in the pitcher's circle for Bethany. The senior allowed eleven hits, five earned runs, and three walks over seven innings while striking out eleven.
The Swedes tallied ten hits in game one. Marissa Riley, Kierstyn McMillen, and Lilliana Martinez each racked up multiple hits for the Swedes. Riley went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Bethany in hits.
Game 2
The Swedes got out to a six-run lead in the first inning and held on for an 8-7 victory over the Broncos in game two.
Bethany scored on a single by Lilliana Martinez, a walk by Sasha Martello, a single by Marissa Riley, a single by Destiny Espinosa, and a double by Kierstyn McMillen in the first inning.
Sasha Martello pitched the Swedes to victory in game two. The righty surrendered five runs on eight hits over five innings, striking out four and walking one. Jordyn Stelzig and Dara Muller entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.
Bethany totaled nine hits, Martinez and McMillen each collected multiple hits for the Swedes. Martinez went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Bethany College Swedes in hits.

The Swedes will be back on the diamond Sunday, February 18 at home versus No. 11 Grand View University. Game one of the double header is scheduled to start at 12:00 PM.
