SWEDES SPLIT AGAINST THE WILLIAM PENN STATESMEN
Lindsborg, Kan. - The Swede Softball team hosted William Penn University for a doubleheader on Sunday. The Swedes came back from behind to win the first game against the Statesmen 5-4. The Swedes were three outs away from a sweep when the Statesmen found a way to rally 4 runs off of infield singles, resulting in a 6-3 loss for the Swedes.
Game 1
William Penn put a run up in the top of the first inning taking the lead 1-0. The Statesmen rallied a couple infield singles to score another run making the score 2-0. The Swedes remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Shantell Evans started the inning off with a base hit. Kat Range would get on base with a fielder's choice bunt. Myranda Jimenez then came up big with a home run over the left field fence, scoring Range as well. This tied the game up 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
Range then hit an infield single to score Danielle Woolsey, taking the lead 3-2. The rally continued as Callissa Lucero scored on a double to right-center field hit by Amaris Guerra. Guerra was savvy on the bases and scored on an infield ground ball hit by Marissa Riley, making the score 5-2.
The Statesmen made a late run but the Swedes were able to get out of a seventh inning jam, finishing the game 5-4.
Cambree Aguirre started in the circle and threw a complete game, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits over seven innings. Aguirre logged 2 strikeouts and 1 walk.
Jimenez, Riley, Allison Rosa, Melinda Cratty, Range, and Guerra each collected one hit to lead the Swedes.
Cratty recorded her 100th career hit against William Penn University.
Game 2
William Penn started off by scoring first in game two from a ground ball RBI. The Swedes trailed the Statesmen 1-0 for 2 innings. Amaris Guerra scored for the Swedes from a ground ball hit by Marissa Riley.
The game remained tied at 1 until the 4th inning when Kat Range took the ball for a ride over the left field fence, updating the score 2-1. William Penn answered back and rallied a run in the top of the 5th tying up the game 2-2.
Destiny Espinosa put the Swedes up 3-2 when she hit her first collegiate home run to left centerfield. The Statesmen would answer back in the top of the 7th with a four run rally, putting them up 6-3. The Swedes were unable to answer back and dropped the game 6-3.
Sasha Martello threw 6 innings allowing 6 runs, only 2 earned. Martello struck out 3 batters and walked none.
Shantell Evans, Espinosa, Myranda Jimenez, Range, and Guerra each collected one hit to lead the Swedes.

The next doubleheader for the Swedes is this Tuesday, February 28th at home, against the Central Christian Tigers. First pitch is set for 3:00PM.
