Wichita, Kan. - The Bethany College Swedes traveled south to Wichita on Friday and Saturday to play in a round robin tournament. The Swedes first matchup of the weekend was against the Missouri Valley Vikings in which the Swedes lost 11-5. The Swedes then turned around and beat the Concordia Bulldogs, 11-9 in eight innings. The Swedes showed up again the next day and beat the Doane Tigers 3-2 in a close game. The Swedes ended the weekend on a loss to the Hannibal LaGrange Trojans, 6-3.
Game 1
The Swedes started off strong against the Vikings, scoring first in the first inning. Bethany rallied three runs in the top of the third making the score 4-0. Missouri Valley responded in the bottom of the third, scoring 3 runs from a long ball, making the score 4-3. The Vikings would score again in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking the lead 5-4 with a couple base hits and a sac fly. In the top of the sixth Bethany answered back and tied the game up at 5 with an RBI ground ball. The Vikings then rallied in the bottom of the 6th inning, scoring 6 runs, solidifying the lead 11-5.
Cambree Aguirre started on the mound, giving up 5 runs on 7 hits while striking out 2. Shantell Evans went yard for her first of the season. Amaris Guerra, Evans, and Kierstyn McMillen each tallied two hits in the game. The Swedes had a total of 8 hits against the Vikings.
Game 2
The game against the Bulldogs started off slow as no one scored until the third innings. Swedes got on the board in the top of the third with two runs from a couple hits and a base running play. Bethany scored again in the top of the fourth with a two run home run by Maggie Heath, making the score 4-0. The Swedes continued to rally and after a few more hits the Swedes made the score 6-0. The Bulldogs answered back and scored a couple runs making the score 6-2. Concordia scored again in the bottom of sixth and tied the game up 6-6. The game remained tied and went into the 8th inning with the international tie breaker and the Swedes rallied 5 runs. Swedes bunted over Danielle Woolsey who then scored on a squeeze bunt. The Swedes passed the bat and Amaris Guerra hit a three run home run making the score 10-6 in the top of the eighth. The Swedes didn't stop there, scoring one more run with a ball hit by Cambree Aguirre, scoring Evans. The swedes went into the bottom of the 8th inning up 11-6. The Bulldogs managed to score 3 three runs before the Swedes closed out the game 11-9.
Sasha Martello started on the mound pitching 5.2 innings and giving up 7 hits while earning 2 strikeouts. Cambree Aguirre came in to close out the game, throwing 2.1 innings, giving up 2 hits, 2 runs and collecting 5 strikeouts.
Guerra went 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run. Lilliana Martinez, Melinda Cratty, and Shantell Evans also had multiple hits in the game.
Game 3
The Swedes scored first on the Tigers in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI base hit by Amaris Guerra who scored Allison Rosa. The Swedes tacked on another run in the bottom of the third inning from an error, making the score 2-0. Doane woke up in the top of the sixth inning and broke the shutout by tying up the game 2-2 from a couple defensive errors. Bethany managed another run in the bottom of the sixth with a lead off base hit by Myranda Jimenez followed by an Amaris Guerra double. Lilliana Martinez then hit a hard ground ball to the right side scoring pinch runner Callissa Lucero. The Swedes then finished the game leaving the tying run on base to win 3-2.
Sasha Martello threw a complete game giving up 5 hits, 0 earned runs, 2 walks, and collected 3 strikeouts. Guerra went 2-for-3 in the game.
Game 4
Swedes started off on the right note scoring two runs right off the bat. Lilliana Martinez hit a two run home run, scoring Kierstyn McMillen who led off with a double. Hannibal LaGrange then scored in the bottom of the first from a few base hits, making the score 2-1. The Trojans then had a 5 run rally in the bottom of the second inning, making the score 6-2. Myranda Jimenez then singled to center field, scoring Melinda Cratty. After a pitching change the Swedes held the Trojan bats at bay, but were unable to rally a comeback, dropping the game 6-3.
Cambree Aguirre started on the mound, throwing 1.2 innings, allowing 2 hits, 5 runs, and collecting 2 strikeouts. Lilliana Martinez came in for relief throwing 4.1 innings, allowing 4 hits, zero runs, and striking out 3.
McMillen went 3-for-4 at the plate while Martinez, Evans, Cratty and Jimenez also collected a hit.

The Swedes are scheduled to play this weekend in McPherson against Morningside University and Briar Cliff University. First game is scheduled Saturday, March 11 at 11:15AM. Game 2 against Briar Cliff is set to start at 1:30PM.
