SWEDES UNABLE TO PRODUCE OFFENSIVELY IN MCPHERSON CLASSIC
McPherson, Kan. - The Bethany College Softball team traveled to McPherson, Kansas to compete against Morningside University and Briar Cliff University. The Swedes were shutout 6-0 against the Morningside Mustangs. The Briar Cliff Chargers beat the Swedes 3-2 in a close game.
Game 1
The Swedes and the Mustangs were in a scoreless game until the top of the 3rd inning when Morningside put two runs up on the board with a base hit, a bunt and a couple fielder's choice plays. The Mustangs then squeezed in another run in the top of the 5th inning with a ground ball RBI that scored a lead off triple, making the score 3-0. The Mustangs kept their foot on the gas pedal and rallied 3 runs in the top of the 7th to make the score 6-0. The Swedes managed to get base runners on but were unable to bring them home, as Bethany remained scoreless for the game.
Sasha Martello threw a complete 7 inning game, allowing 6 runs, 13 hits, and collecting 1 strikeout. Amaris Guerra recorded one hit with a double down the right field line. Lilliana Martinez and Allison Rosa each recorded one hit for the Swedes.
Game 2
The Chargers scored first in the bottom of the 3rd inning, with the two run rally starting off with the lead off batter bunting for a single. Another bunt and an error would push the first run of the game across home plate for Briar Cliff. A sacrifice line drive would then score the second run for the Chargers, making the score 2-0. The Swedes answered back in the top of the 4th inning, scoring two runs of their own and tying up the game 2-2. Shantell Evans started off the inning with a hard ground ball single up the middle. Evans would put herself into scoring position advancing from first base all the way to third base on a wild pitch that got away from the catcher. Myranda Jimenez then hit a sac fly to left field, scoring Evans. Sasha Martello followed up with a walk and was subbed with Callissa Lucero on first base. Lucero then advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and scored from a single hit by Melinda Cratty, making the score 2-2. The Chargers responded by pushing another run across home plate. A lead off single, an error, and a sac bunt would put the go ahead run for the Chargers on third base with one out. A two out base hit to left field would bring in the third and final run scored by the Chargers. Making the score 3-2. The Swedes were unable to rally back and dropped the game 3-2 in 7 innings.
Lilliana Martinez threw a complete game, allowing 6 hits, 2 earned runs, and 1 walk. Kierstyn McMillen went 2-for-4 at the plate. Destiny Espinosa went 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk, along with a diving play in left field to help the Swedes. Amaris guerra, Evans, Martello, and Cratty each recorded a hit for the Swedes. Jimenez and Cratty recorded an RBI each.

The Lady Swedes will be back on the diamond this Tuesday, March 14th for the first conference matchup of the season. The Swedes will be hosting Bethel College with the double header starting at 2:00PM.
