SLOW START FOR THE SWEDES; 0-2 IN HOME OPENER

Lindsborg, Kan.- The Bethany College Swedes hosted their home opener double header versus the Grand View University Vikings, Sunday, February 18th after their Saturday double header was canceled.

Game 1: Bethany struggled to get their bats going while Grand View managed to connect first in the top of the 4th inning earning one run.

The Vikings would again put runners in scoring position in the top of the 5th inning. Grand View scored an additional three runs making the score 4-0. Bethany would respond with a homer by Lilliana Martinez scoring the first run for the Swedes and a single by Katherine Range who earned an RBI, cutting the deficient in half, 2-4.

Unfortunately for the Swedes, Grand View would score again in the 6th inning, securing the first win of the day, 8-2.

Morgan Pennycuff started in the circle for Bethany, throwing 51 strikes out of 76 pitches and faced 20 batters before being relieved by Jordyn Stelzig who faced 8 batters, throwing 25 strikes out of 39 pitches. The Swedes finished with Dylann Baker on the mound with 20 strikes out of 29 pitches and 8 batters faced.

Game 2: Bethany made a few lineup changes, including moving Lilliana Martinez to the mound as the starting pitcher, for game two. The Swedes were determined to split the double header but the Vikings would put up a challenge after scoring their first run in the first inning.

Grand View would score again in the second inning extending their lead to 4-0 and once again in the fourth inning putting the Swedes behind 7-0. Shantell Evans at the plate to get the Swedes started on a potential comeback with Lilliana Martinez on base, who homered to left field earning 2 RBIs. Score was 7-2.  Also, in the bottom of the sixth, Melinda Cratty earned a double RBI after a single to center field bringing home Briana Buck and Ulissa Rivas making the score 7-4 where it would stay. Grand View completed a double header sweep.

Lilliana Martinez faced 23 batters and threw 39 strikes out of 55 pitches, Dylann Baker who relieved Martinez in the fifth inning faced 15 batters and threw 36 strikes out of 49 pitches.

Bethany will be on the road Wednesday, February 21st in Langston, Oklahoma to take on the Langston University Lions. The double header is set for 2 and 4 pm.
