CRATTY’S WALKOFF GRAND SLAM HELPS SWEDES SPLIT WITH PIONEERS

Lindsborg, Kan.- The Bethany College Swedes hosted a double header versus the MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers, Saturday, February 24th. The Swedes split with the Pioneers with Game 1 going to Bethany 12-9 in extra innings and Game 2 going to the Pioneers 6-1.

Game 1: The Pioneers were first to score with a single run in the top of the 1st inning. MidAmerica Nazarene would score again in the second inning making the score 0-4. But the Swedes would respond after Allison Rosa made it on base earning an RBI and bringing Maggie Heath home, score was now 1-4. That wouldn't be all, Bethany would earn three more runs before the end of the inning. Melinda Cratty earned two RBI with her single to left field, and Lilliana Martinez would earn one RBI with her single to center field. The score was tied 4-4 heading into the third inning. The Pioneers would score again in the fourth inning making the score 4-5. Katherine Range would answer with a two-run homerun to center field, the score was now 6-5.

This game would once again be tied in the top of the 6th inning at 7-7 after the Pioneers scored two. Neither team was able to score forcing Game 1 to go to extra innings. MidAmerica Nazarene would earn two runs in the top of the 8th to take the advantage 7-9. Ulissa Rivas would have something to say to that with a single to left field bringing home Maggie Heath, score was now 8-9. Melinda Cratty would step up to the plate and nail a homer to left field, earning 4 RBI and winning the game 12-9.

Morgan Pennycuff started in the circle for Bethany, throwing 20 strikes out of 34 pitches and faced 8 batters before being relieved by Dylann Baker who faced 31 batters, throwing 60 strikes out of 78 pitches.

Game 2: Bethany made a few lineup changes, including moving Lilliana Martinez to the mound as the starting pitcher, for Game 2. The Swedes were determined to sweep the MidAmerica Nazarene but the Pioneers would put up a challenge after scoring their first run in the first inning.

Pioneers lead by one, 0-1 unanswered until the Swedes scored in the bottom of the third inning. Destiny Espinosa hit a triple to center field earning an RBI with Melinda Cratty scoring. Score was now 1-1. The top of 5th would mark the start of Bethany's downfall as MidAmerica Nazarene was able to score two more runs extending their lead to 1-3. The Swedes weren't able to respond and the Pioneers would capitalize and score three more runs, the score was 1-6 were it would stay. Final score 1-6 in favor the Pioneers.

Lilliana Martinez faced 22 batters and threw 46 strikes out of 61 pitches, Jordan Stelzig who relieved Martinez in the fifth inning faced 13 batters and threw 25 strikes out of 43 pitches.

Bethany will be hosting a double header Wednesday, February 28th at 1 and 3pm against Graceland University. The Swedes are 5-3 overall and the Yellowjackets are 7-2.
