SWEDES SWEEP LIONS IN TWELVE INNINGS
Langston, Okla.- The Bethany College Swedes were on the road to take on the Langston University Lions, Wednesday, February 21st. The Swedes swept the Lions with Game 1 ending 6-3, and Game 2 ending in 16-1 in five innings.
Game 1: The Swedes would start off strong with two runs earned in the top of the first. Shantell Evans singled earning the RBI with Melinda Cratty scoring. Followed by Katherine Range singling and earning an RBI with Destiny Espinosa scoring. The Lions weren't able to respond which gave the Swedes the opportunity to extend their 2-0 lead in the top of the second. And Allison Rosa did just that with a single homerun, the score was now 3-0. Langston would however respond to this. The Lions scored one run in the bottom of the second inning, score was 3-1. Bethany would score again the 4th inning with a single by Melinda Cratty, earning two RBIs with Brianna Buck and Ulissa Rivas scoring. This would be followed up by a homerun by Langston. The score going into the 5th inning was 5-2 with the Swedes up by three. Maggie Heath would by the next Swede to earn an RBI after a ground out to shortstop but allowing Vryah Morgan to score, the score was now 6-2. The Lions would try to make a comeback in the bottom of the 6th after scoring one run, 6-3, but wouldn't be able to. Final score of Game 1, 6-3 in favor of the Swedes.
Morgan Pennycuff started in the circle for Bethany and faced 28 batters before being relieved by Dylann Baker who faced 3 batters.
Game 2: Bethany would light it up in the Game 2 finishing early in only five innings. Jordan Stelzig would be the starting pitcher for the Swedes for this second game. Brianna Buck would be the one to get things going for Bethany with a double and earning an RBI with Ulissa Rivas scoring in the top of the 2nd inning. Melinda Cratty would follow things up with a double of her own and two RBIs with Allison Rosa and Brianna Buck scoring. But that's not all, Shantell Evans would continue keeping the Swedes in play, earning an RBI and getting on base via error. Katherine Range would hit a double, bringing home Shantell Evans, Lilliana Martinez, and Destiny Espinosa, earning three RBIs. The score was now 7-0 but the Swedes weren't finished yet, Tamia Butler would hit a single, bringing home Katherine Range. Next Allison Rosa would nail a triple, earning three RBIs with Brianna Buck, Tamia Butler, and Ulissa Rivas scoring. The score at the end of the 2nd inning was 11-0.
The Swedes would score again in the 3rd inning after keeping the Lions from scoring in the bottom of the second. Lilliana Martinez homered a two-run homerun in the top of the 3rd inning, 13-0. Followed by a sacrifice flyout to center field by Tamia Butler which brought Xiomara De Jesus home, earning an RBI and making the score 14-0. Langston would score a single run in the bottom of the 3rd inning making the score 14-1. The Swedes would score an addition two more runs, one in the 4th inning and the other in the 5th and final inning. Final score was 16-1.
Jordan Stelzig faced 19 batters in Game 2.
