SWEDES FALL SHORT AGAINST THE EAGLES
Kansas City, MO.- The Bethany College Swedes were on the road Wednesday, March 6th playing the Avila University Eagles in a weekday double header.
Game 1: The Swedes struggled early in Game 1 after the Eagles managed to score two runs in the bottom of the first inning that would go unanswered. Bethany tried to get an offense started but Avila would keep the Swedes from gaining momentum. The Eagles would score again in the bottom of the second inning after one homer and two doubles by Avila. The score was 0-7 heading into the third inning. Both teams quiet in the third but the Eagles would make some noise in the fourth scoring an additional three runs making the deficient 0-10 for the Swedes. Unfortunately for Bethany, the game would end early in five innings after Eagles kept the Swedes scoreless in the top of the fifth. Final score 0-10.
Morgan Pennycuff started in the circle for Bethany and faced 15 batters and threw 36 strikes out of 60 pitches before being relieved by Dylann Baker who faced 10 batters and thew 24 strikes out of 26 pitches.
Game 2: The Swedes came out in Game 2 determined to prevent the sweep by the Eagles and walk away with a win. Neither team scored in the first inning. Top of the second, Caitlin Meyers grounded one out to third base which allowed Shantell Evans to try and take home and was able to score after an error made by the catcher. Swedes 1, Eagles 0. However, Avila would respond in the bottom of the second with a run of their own, tying up the game at 1-1. Things would go quiet again for the Swedes while the Eagles would score again in the bottom of the third, 1-2. Bethany was able to get things going again in the top of the fifth inning. Melinda Cratty hit a double down the left field line which allowed Tamia Butler to score, 2-2. Followed by a wild pitch by Avila which opened the door for Allison Rosa to score, 3-2. The Eagles would respond with a 2 RBI homer for the lead at 3-4. This would be the final run of the game for both teams despite having two more innings to play. Final score 3-4 in favor of the Eagles.
Lilliana Martinez faced 27 batters in Game 2 and threw 59 strikes out of 83 pitches.

Bethany will be on the road in Hays, Kan. with a double header Thursday, March 14th at 1 and 3pm against the Fort Hays State University Tigers after their home double header against the College of St. Mary Flames was postponed due to weather.
