Hays, Kan.- The Bethany College Swedes were on the road Thursday, March 14th playing the Fort Hays State University Tigers in a weekday double header. The Swedes fell to the Tigers 2-7 in Game 1 and 5-8 in Game 2.
Game 1: Quick start for the Swedes after Katherine Range brought Lilliana Martinez and Destiny Espinosa home with a double to right center, earning 2 RBI and making the score 2-0. Unfornately, these would be the only runs scored by the Swedes. The Tigers would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Fort Hays would score again in the 3rd, 4th and 6th inning before the end of the game. Final score was 2-7 in favor of the Tigers.
Morgan Pennycuff started in the circle for Bethany and faced 28 batters and threw 64 strikes out of 102 pitches.
Game 2: Fort Hays off to a quick start this time, earning 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. The Swedes would respond with a double to right center by Destiny Espinosa which brought home Melinda Cratty and Allison Rosa, making it a tied game at 2-2 going into the bottom of the 3rd. The Tigers would take control of the game with three more runs, 2-5, going into the top of the 6th inning. Bethany would light it up starting with a single to center field by Brianna Buck, which allowed Brianna Lopez to score, 3-5. Next, Allison Rosa was walked which advanced Ulissa Rivas home scoring another run, 4-5. And lastly, Melinda Cratty singled down the right side and Tamia Butler scored, making the game tied again at 5-5. Fort Hays would go on to score, ending the game with a final score of 5-8.
Lilliana Martinez faced 16 batters and threw 36 strikes out of 59 pitches before being relieved by Dylann Baker who faced 11 and threw 29 strikes out of 38 pitches. Jordan Stelzig would come and relieve Dylann Baker and would face 9 batters and threw 19 strikes out of 30.
