SWEDES FLY PAST FALCONS IN WEEKEND SWEEP

Lindsborg, Kan.- The Bethany College Swedes hosted the Friends University Falcons in a weekend double header, Saturday, March 23rd. The Swedes swept the Falcons winning Game 1, 4-2, and Game 2, 6-5.

Game 1: The excitement started in the bottom of the 3rd inning when the Swedes scored the first run of the game after a fielder's choice which gave Allison Rosa the chance to score after an error made by the Falcons. Next run came from a sacrifice flyout hit by Lilliana Martinez to center field which opened the door for Briana Buck to reach home. The score was 2-0 heading into the 4th inning. The Falcons were unable to respond giving the Swedes the opportunity to extend their lead. Briana Buck singled to second base which sent Tamia Butler home after an error, score was now 3-0. Friends once again were kept from scoring in the top of the 5th inning. The Swedes now up to bat, Tamia Butler hit a single to right center and advanced to second and gave Maggie Heath the opening to reach Homeplate and score. The score was now 4-0. Top of the 6th inning, the Falcons managed to score after a couple of successful at bats with two runs scored. Final score was 4-2 in favor of the Swedes.

Dylann Baker in the circle for Bethany for Game 1 and faced 26 batters and threw 57 strikes out of 93 pitches.

Game 2: The second game of the day proved to be a feat with the game going into an extra inning. Again, first on the board, Bethany scored two runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning after a flyout to right field by Tamia Butler, Lilliana Martinez and Maggie Heath reached home. Both teams silent in the 3rd inning. Still down by 2, Friends managed to score in the 4th inning with two single homeruns hit which tied up the game at 2-2. Bethany was kept from scoring in the bottom of the 4th inning. The Falcons back up to bat scored again now making the score 3-2 and taking their first lead of the day. To this, the Swedes had a response, Melinda Cratty hit a single to left field and giving Tamia Butler the opening to score. The score was now tied again at 3-3. The Falcons went silent in the top of the 6th inning and the Swedes were again at bat. Katherine Range stepped up and hit a single to right center and Lilliana Martinez scored, 4-3. Next Allison Rosa singled to left center with Brianna Lopez scoring, 5-3. Unfortunately, Friends would respond with a 2 RBI homerun which tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the 7th inning and kept the Swedes from scoring in the bottom of the 7th inning sending the game into an extra inning. The Falcons were kept from scoring in the top of the 8th by Bethany. Now up to bat, Shantell Evans hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing home Maloree Byford for the win. Final score was 6-5 in favor of Bethany.

Lilliana Martinez started on the mound for Game 2 and faced 21 batters and threw 53 strikes out of 79 pitches before being relieved by Jordan Stelzig. Jordan Stelzig faced 10 batters and threw 25 strikes out of 40 pitches before being relieved by Morgan Pennycuff. Morgan Pennycuff faced 4 batters and threw 11 strikes out of 13 pitches before shutting the door on a possible Falcons win.

Bethany will be on the road for a weekday double header, Wednesday, March 26th at 1 and 3pm at York University, taking on the 4-18 Panthers.
