SWEDES SEND OFF SENIORS WITH SOUTHWESTERN SWEEP

Lindsborg, Kan.- The Bethany College Swedes hosted the Southwestern College Moundbuilders in their Seniors Day celebration double header, Saturday, April 20th. The Swedes swept the Moundbuilders, Game 1: 4-0, and Game 2: 12-0 in 5 innings.

Game 1: Both teams braced the cold to start Game 1 where there was little action until late in the game. The bottom of the 5th inning, Brianna Buck hit a double to center field where she earned 2 RBI with Melinda Cratty and Lilliana Martinez scoring, 2-0. Next, in the bottom of the 6th inning, Lilliana Martinez doubled to left center earning 2 RBI with Maloree Byford and Brianna Lopez scoring, 4-0. The Swedes would keep the Moundbuilders from making a comeback with the final score being 4-0 in favor of Bethany.

Lilliana Martinez in the circle for Bethany for Game 1 and faced 24 batters and threw 55 strikes out of 77 pitches in a shut-out game.

Game 2:  The Swedes came out of the gate hot in Game 2, scoring 6 runs in the first inning alone. Destiny Espinosa got things started for the Swedes with a single to left field which allowed Melinda Cratty to score, 1-0. Next, Ulissa Rivas hit a single to left field with Brianna Buck scoring, 2-0. Maggie Heath kept things going after reaching first via error by the second baseman which gave Destiny Espinosa the opportunity to score, 3-0. After another fielding error, Allison Rosa made it on base and Ulissa Rivas scored, 4-0. Next, Melinda Cratty singled to center field where Lilliana Martinez and Maggie Heath scored, 6-0. Southwestern was unable to respond. Bottom of the 2nd inning, the Swedes would score an additional 2 runs. Marley Munz scored after an error by the catcher, making it 7-0. And Melinda Cratty singled to center field which gave Lilliana Martinez the opportunity to score, 8-0. The Swedes continued to shut out the Moundbuilders heading into the bottom of the 3rd inning where Lilliana Martinez double to right center and Destiny Espinosa scored, 9-0. Followed by a single by Caitlin Myers which sent home Lilliana Martinez and Maggie Heath to score, 11-0. After the Moundbuilders were unsuccessful at bat, the Swedes would score their final run in the bottom of the 4th inning. Brianna Buck would hit a triple to right center and Allison Rosa would score, 12-0. The Swedes would take Game 2 in only 5 innings after shutting out Southwestern, 12-0.

Dylann Baker started on the mound for Game 2 and faced 12 batters and threw 31 strikes out of 42 pitches before being relieved by Morgan Pennycuff. Morgan Pennycuff faced 6 batters and threw 19 strikes out of 29 pitches.

Bethany will be on the road, Wednesday, April 24th in Salina, Kansas to take on the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes for a weekday double header starting at 6pm.
