LINDSBORG, KAN. – The Bethany College Swedes Women's Soccer Team played host to the McPherson College Bulldogs in a KCAC Matchup Wednesday, October 11.
Mother Nature would play a huge factor in the match as the team with the wind at their backs were at a huge advantage. The Bulldogs would begin play with the aforementioned advantage, but would fail to capitalize.
Towards the end of the first half, Donatella Luccarreli would find herself on a fast break, but would be fouled in the box by a defender. The foul resulted in a yellow card for the Bulldogs and a penalty kick for Andrea Garza who would find the back of the net to put the Swedes up 1-0. Garza would attempt one more shot right before the half, but would only find the crossbar.
The second half resulted in neither team scoring, so Bethany would take this one 1-0.
The win snaps a 12-game winless streak dating back to last year when the Swedes were victorious over the York University Panthers.
Andrea Garza would lead the Swedes in total shots taken (3) and tie for the team lead in shots on goal (2) with Ariana Hurley. Molly Atchley would start the first half for the Swedes and be tasked with defending the Bulldogs who had the wind at their backs. Atchley would tally 3 total saves before being replaced at half by Mackenzie Nutter who recorded 2 saves.
Up Next…
The Swedes will look to make it two in a row with the Avila University Eagles coming to town for Hyllningsfest and Homecoming on Saturday, October 14th. Kickoff is set for 5pm following the football game.
