COCKRUM EARNS FIRST WIN AS SWEDES BREAK TWO-YEAR WINLESS STREAK

Lindsborg, Kan. – The Bethany College Swedes Women's Soccer team earned their first win of the season with a 2–1 victory over the Sterling College Warriors on Wednesday night at Coach Ted Kessinger Family Stadium.
The Swedes started strong, keeping control of the game and creating several good chances in the first half, especially down the right side. Bethany took nine shots in the opening 45 minutes while limiting Sterling to just two harmless attempts, going into halftime tied 0–0 but clearly on the front foot.
Bethany finally broke the deadlock just 45 seconds into the second half when Jysell Sampedro took advantage of a poor clearance by the Warriors' goalkeeper. Sampedro brought the ball down with her chest and chipped it over the keeper, who was caught off her line, scoring a beautiful goal to give the Swedes the lead.
The second goal came in the 69th minute after a nice combination between Grace Van Wagner and Fernanda Pena, who sent a perfect pass to Sampedro. She crossed the ball while being fouled in the box, but the referee played advantage, and Lauryn Machuzak finished the chance to make it 2–0.
Sterling scored in the 82nd minute through Jessica Gautreau after a strong individual play, but the Swedes' defense stayed organized to close out the match. Goalkeeper Marie Miera Y Moseley also made a couple of key saves late to help secure the win.
This result is an important moment for the program:
• Ends 707 days without a win for the women's team
• Snaps an 18-game conference losing streak
• First win under Head Coach Elliot Cockrum
• First win of the season for the Swedes
• First conference match and first conference win of the season
