SWEDES LOSE 5-8 AGAINST YORK UNIVERSITY
York, Neb - The Bethany College Baseball team traveled north to take on York University for the second game of the conference midweek series. The Swedes came out hot in the first inning but would go quietly in the next eight losing by the score of 5-8. With that win York University's conference record now stands at 7-4 and with the loss brings the Swedes' record to 2-9.
In the top of the first inning the Swedes were able to put up four runs on two doubles and three singles. Noel Perez got the bats going with a single, followed by a Joseph Rivera single. With runners on first and second David Espinal roped a double to left-center, scoring Perez and moving Rivera to third base. That gave the Swedes the early 1-0 lead but they weren't done just yet. Freshman Connor Crayton followed up Espinal with a double of his own, scoring both runners and giving the Swedes a 3-0 lead. Luis Ramos hit a hard line drive down the left field line for a single that allowed Crayton to score and for the Swedes to put up a four spot in the top of the first.
Willard Frizzell started on the mound for the Swedes and would have a decent outing despite what his line showed. Coming off sickness the hard throwing righty lasted four and a thirds innings with two hits, three runs, nine walks and five strikeouts. The walks would be the difference in the game but Frizzell would keep getting out of the inning unharmed. Until the bottom of the fifth inning came around and Frizzell would be pulled with runners on base that he would be responsible for and the Swedes would bring in Nick Flores. The first batter Flores would face would take him deep to center for a three-run homerun. The very next Panther batter would also take Flores deep to left for back-to-back home runs. Flores would go two and a thirds inning on six hits, five runs, no walks, and three strikeouts. Jacob Mallozzi would come in relief to finish out the game going one and a third innings giving up two hits, no runs, no walks, and two strikeouts.
The Swedes would try to rally late in the game down four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, they would get the bases loaded with Caleb Copeland up to bat. Copeland would draw a bases loaded walk to gain the RBI and give the Swedes one more run. With the bases loaded and a chance to tie the game with a ball in the gap, Andrew Massey would ground out to end the game and the Swedes would lose 5-8.
