SWEDES FALL SHORT IN THE FIRST ROUND PLAYOFF GAME
McPherson, Kan. - The Bethany College Volleyball team traveled to McPherson, Kansas to take on the Bulldogs in the First Round of Playoffs. Bethany fell short against McPherson, losing in four sets and ending the Swedes 2022 season.
The Swedes fell behind in the first set after a six point and nine point run from the Bulldogs. Bethany was unable to comeback from the eleven point deficit and lost the first set 14-24. Despite the results of the first set, the Swedes stayed in the game and battled the entire second set. The start of the set was rocky for the Swedes as the Bulldogs had a five point run right away, putting the Swedes back 2-7. The Swedes started to make their way back from a seven point deficit with a service ace from Britta Romisch, followed by a Bulldog error making the score 10-15. Bethany then had back to back kills by Alyssa George and Zola Moore as the Swedes started to gain momentum. Another kill by Zola Moore, a Bulldog error and missed serve, resulted in a three point streak for the Swedes, making the score 17-19. The Bulldogs and Swedes went back and forth for the next few serves until the Swedes tied up the set at twenty-three points with a kill by Alyssa George. McPherson went up to set point with a kill but an attack error by the Bulldogs tied the game up again at twenty-four points. A kill by Zola Moore put the Swedes up by a point and an attack error by McPherson secured the set for the Swedes with the score ending 26-24.
The third set started in the same way, with the Bulldogs starting off by scoring six points right away. The Swedes fell behind 3-11 before Bethany found a rhythm and started to work their way back with a couple kills by Britta Romisch. A late four point run was not enough to overcome the lead the Bulldogs had gotten. The set ended with a score of 21-25. The fourth set started off with both teams battling for every point. The set was tied 8-8 until McPherson went on a three point run and took the lead. The Bulldogs added on to the lead with two more three point runs putting them up 16-22. The Swedes were unable to shift the momentum and lost the set 17-25.
Britta Romisch and Zola Moore both scored nine points on the night. Romisch had eight kills, an ace, and four digs. Moore had eight kills, two block assists, along with two digs. Justice Brackney followed close behind scoring 8.5 points by making seven kills out of sixteen attempts and only making one error, leading to a .375 kill percentage. Brackney also had three digs, one solo block, and a block assist. Mandy Knipp and McKenzie Scott both had seventeen assists on the night.
