IT’S A SWEDE SWEEP; BETHANY CLOSES OUT HOME OPENER IN 3-SET MATCH
Lindsborg, Kan. - Bethany College hosted the Calvary University Warriors in their home opener, Thursday, September 11th at 6pm in Hahn Gymnasium. The Swedes earned their first sweep of the year in a quick three-set match.
First set of the match, Bethany started off hot earning a five-point lead over the Warriors at 7-2. From there, the Swedes continued to be aggressive and forced errors. Calvary tried to regroup but the Swedes weren't letting up. Bethany led by as many as eleven at one point, 21-10. The Swedes finished the set, 25-13 and hitting a .195 as a team and earning 13 kills. As the second set got started, the Warriors caught a couple of early breaks and the score was close at 6-6 before the Swedes really took over and set the tempo. Bethany found their rhythm at the net and managed to build off of kills to earn a seven-point lead over Calvary, 20-13. The Warriors tried to make a last-minute push but the Swedes held them off and took the set, 25-18, hitting a .255 and earning 18 kills. With the sweep within reach, Bethany was determined to close out the match quickly but Calvary had something else in mind. Going back and forth, both teams struggled to break free from the other and the set was tied at 10-10. The Swedes broke the stalemate and took off, gaining a lead of six points, 18-12. The Warriors tried to throw a hail Mary to try and bridge the gap but the deficient was too large to recover from. Bethany finished the set, 25-16, hitting a .205 and earning 14 kills. Overall, the Swedes hit a .220 and earned 45 kills on the night with 84 digs and 41 assists.
Notable Stats from this game include 13 kills and hitting a .444 was Blanca Ariciniega Palma, 19 assists and 14 digs by Ashlynn Gehring, 21 digs by Michelle Acevedo Ortiz, and 20 digs by the freshman DS, Trinity McCollister.
