Swedes Lose in Walk-Off Fashion on Opening Day
Austin, Tex. - The Bethany College Baseball team traveled to Austin, Texas to take on Huston-Tillotson University. On opening day the Swedes would lose the first game of the series off a 6-7 walk-off Saturday afternoon.
In the top of the first inning the Swedes started the scoring early thanks to a Randy Good two-run double. He was able to bring in Noel Perez and Connor Crayton. They would tack on another from a single by Emanuel Alicea. Huston-Tillotson would score in the bottom half of the inning from a passed ball that allowed the Rams to score.
Swedes kept the bats rolling early adding on to the lead when Joseph Rivera hit a homer to dead center. That would bring the game to 4-1 going into the bottom half of the inning. Huston-Tillotson would keep chipping away after the Swedes would score one run in the top of the second, answering with one of their own off a sacrifice fly.
The game would remain scoreless until the fifth inning when Joseph Rivera hit a double to lead off the inning and would eventually come around to score off a RBI single by Alexander Cuevas.
Huston-Tillotson University got the bats going in the bottom of the sixth scoring three runs in the inning. The first run came off an error by shortstop Rivera which started the late rally. The Rams would add two more runs to tie the game at 6-6 thanks to a two-run double by the Rams.
The Swedes couldn't answer back, going scoreless in the top half of the sixth and seventh inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning Huston-Tillotson would walk it off when Adam Sheehan sends a ball to right-center to score the winning run from third base.
Jared Gonzales pitched for Huston-Tillotson University and would pick up the victory. Gonzales lasted two innings, allowing zero hits and zero runs while striking out two.
Willard Frizzell took the loss for the Swedes. Frizzell surrendered one run on two hits over one-third of an inning, striking out one and walking one.
Judd McCall started the game for the Swedes. The righthander went six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out six. Brycen Lee started the game for Huston-Tillotson University. Lee would surrender five runs on eight hits over five innings, striking out three and walking one
Swedes offensively collected eight hits. Joseph Rivera and Emanuel Alicea each managed multiple hits for the Swedes.
Huston-Tillotson University collected nine hits on the day. Grimes and Luke Vizcarra each racked up multiple hits for Huston-Tillotson University. Grimes went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Huston-Tillotson University in hits
