SWEDES GET SWEPT AGAINST KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY

Salina, Kan. - The Bethany College Baseball team faced off against Kansas Wesleyan for a three game conference series. The Coyotes got the best of the Swedes as they were able to sweep in all three games.

In game one of the series, Kansas Wesleyan won by the score of 14-4 in seven innings. The game started strong for the Swedes as the lead-off hitter, Noel Perez, took the first pitch of the game over the fence for an opposite field home run and the first of the season for Perez. Joseph Rivera followed that up with a single the opposite way and David Espinal joined the fun with hitting a two-run home run. The Swedes were up 3-0 early on before the bats got hot for KWU. The Swedes would add one run in the top half of the fifth inning on a RBI double by Noel Perez. The starter on the mound for the Swedes was Maurico Hernandez who lasted three innings with six hits, three runs, three walks and one strikeout. First in relief was Nick Flores who had a good outing despite his line. Flores went three innings on four hits, six runs (three earned), two walks, and two strikeouts. Kiber Guitierez, Koy Jorgenson, and William Boswell all pitched in game one of the series as well. Defensively the Swedes had four errors.

Game two of the series had many of the same results as game one. KWU would beat the Swedes 12-2 in seven innings. The pitching for the Swedes just could not quite down the bats as KWU left the ballpark five times in the game. Offensively the Swedes only had four hits with two runs being scored. Joseph Rivera had two hits in the game, Caleb Rodriguez and Caleb Copeland were the other two hits in the game. The first run scored was via a sacrifice fly by Luis Ramos to score Rivera from third base in the top of the fourth inning. In the sixth inning the Swedes got their second run from a Joseph Rivera RBI single to score Caleb Copeland. On the mound for the Swedes was starting pitcher Judd McCall who lasted three innings giving up six hits, seven runs (six earned), four walks, and four strikeouts. Nieves came in relief and went two and a third inning allowing four hits, one run, and two walks. Willian Figueroa-Soto was the final pitcher in the game and Soto lasted an inning on two hits, four runs, four walks and two strikeouts. Defensively the Swedes had four errors.

In the series finale KWU won by the score of 12-4 in seven innings. On the mound for the Swedes was two-way player Willard Frizzell. Frizzell was hit around pretty hard early in the ballgame, only lasting two innings on seven hits, nine earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts. The Swedes offense scored one run in the top of the first inning and in the fourth inning, three runs came in. Luis Ramos picked up the RBI with two outs in the first inning to give the Swedes the early lead. In the fourth inning Joseph Rivera walked to lead off the inning followed by a Caleb Rodriguez single to get runners on first and third. Luis Ramos doubled down the right field line to score Rivera and move Rodriguez to third base. Isaiah Romero grounded out to third base but was able to score Rodriguez for the RBI. Connor Crayton singled up the middle to bring in Ramos and give the Swedes the three-run inning.
